Retreat to home...

I said I would, and I did...

When the Retreat edition of Fat Quarterly came out last week I printed out Kerry's little freezer paper-pieced house straight away.

A bit of life and other stuff got in the way of my eager plans, but I have now built my own little home...

I tried really hard to go with the freezer paper - I even managed the Y-seams, (although one side was a lot easier than the other - is that always the way?).  But I have serious doubts that this method is for me.

I now love, love, love foundation paper-piecing, however I just don't quite gel with this.  I like to use freezer paper to cut my fabric when foundation piecing, and that works really well, but I just couldn't get the accuracy I have grown to love this time.  Nothing to do with the freezer paper dropping off, having been ironed on and removed a dozen time in the fabric auditions, I'm sure!

So in the end it may be a little bit wonky, but I still think it's cute.

  1. This is so lovely! I love Little Red Riding Hood and her pot of tea, and the chickens running in the front garden. I wish I could have done this class (along with Portholes ... but then the Retreat would have to have been 3 days long). Very cute indeed!

  6. It looks great and I don't think you would be able to do it better with freezer paper...the pieces were seriously tiny for the house. I haven't tried it....I know it would drive me bonkers!!

  11. It is gorgeous! I know freezer paper peicing is not for everyone, maybe a technique to save when nothing else will do? That selvedge is killing me!

  12. Love the house. I'm the opposite of you though. I loved Kerry's class but foundation paper piecing still leaves me rather perplexed and astounded by the amount if fabric I use doing it.

  15. I think it's super duper cute. Love the chickens in the yard and the little pot of tea. You did a fab job. I think I'm with you, though. Foundation piecing is my friend. Freezer paper and I just didn't see eye to eye. Still, it's good to give new things a try :)

  17. Well done you! I have a couple lined up that I have to do for bee blocks, but I'll admit, I'm still a sucker for the foundation PP too...

  20. It is a very cute house. I want to give this approach a try but I expect that it is not really my thing either.

  21. Super, super cute! I do the same thing as you, use freezer paper for the cutting, at least of the fussy cut pieces, and then foundation paper piecing. Adore how this turned out for you!

  22. I like her little sweet houses too. Not sure I'm going to tackle it just now. I have an embroidery project bag I would like to re-tackle with a brand new needle to see if some of my vinyl problems were because I was too lazy to flippin' change the needle.

  23. Hiya. I've not had much time to read blogs, so I've just caught with your activities. Lovely mboidery and blocks, ans a fab little house, did you use selvedge above the door?

  24. Seriously gorgeous block! & remember the "galloping horse" rule.
If it can't be seen from a person on a galloping horse, it doesn't matter!
    Cheers
