On Brown...

I think it is time I set the record straight on 'brown'.

Having pulled Rhonda's leg about Mouthy Stitches being an all brown swap, this colour has taken a bashing within the group, and although I will immediately say to anyone who asks, that I dislike, even HATE brown fabric, there are obviously exceptions to the rule.

So just to prove that I do not think all brown is evil, here are some of the fabulous few which I love...

Denyse Schmidt
Joel Dewberry
Lotta Jansdotter
Etsuko Furuya
Of course you need to know where I get this, perhaps irrational, phobia from.  Look at this selection I spotted on eBay this evening, with a quick search for 'brown fabric'...

Help, my eyes!  These are my idea of what I could be given if I didn't claim to hate brown, f'ugly is not adequate, these are hideous, and maybe they wouldn't be any better in any other colour, but the brown just tips me over the edge.  I cannot take the risk!

If you are not feeling queasy enough, these (in my humble opinion) are the ultimate crime against fabric...

These should be banned!

I apologise if you are not of the same nervous disposition and have a love of the brown batik, please hoard and enjoy your precious stash and never EVER share it with anyone as narrow-minded and opinionated as me!

Which leads me nicely onto...  Marmite is the ultimate brown!

When I said my Cherry Star background fabric was going to be 'marmite', I meant that some will love it, (I hope), but I expect some people to hate/not get my choice, but I am prepared for that!

If you have never looked at the Marmite website, then do, I think it explains exactly why this is such an apt analogy!  I hate marmite too xxx

Back tomorrow with less attitude, and photos of today's purchases, damn and thank you John Lewis!

  1. Lovin' the brown bashing.
Funny how adding more oranges brightens up the boring brown.

  6. Hey now, what did we ever do to you to have those e-bay browns inflicted upon us?! Or those batiks?! Horrible woman :oP As for Marmite - blech

  7. Well I'm very happy with the brown shot cottons I now need to make into a quilt!
Oh Hadley, you really disappoint me - a hater of Marmite?!! My fave breakfast to pick up at the train station and take to the office was bacon, garlic mushroom and marmite on toast - Billy no mates? You bet!

  8. I agree with the brown batiks but you really can't go around bad mouthing marmite! ;)

  9. Ugh is right - dreadful batiks there!
As for marmite I've no idea at all what it tastes like so I can't say either way!

  10. I think you dislike those dull grey browns- most of us agree. the vibrant glowing 'clean' browns, now they are a different matter. There are some great browns, I just bought 'kimono' fabric in brown, and it is glowing and gorgeous. but, I can feel the same about blue, green, red, yellow is difficult..
Did you know that brown is negative yellow? I am talking additive colour, not subtractive, ie matching colours with light. (another nerdy bit of info, sorry)

  11. I presume those charms on eBay have been ordered to make something for Rhonda!

  12. ARe you joining the Fugly fabrics swap coming up soon. I have plenty of those hideous batiks from my early quilting days, before I knew better!

  13. Marmite was put on this earth as a Mother's substitute for when brussel sprouts are out of season. EUW! I'd rather swallow a tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil!

As for brown, we've been through it all before and I am right beside you, sister.

  14. mmmm, I love marmite, but only thinly spread - a bit like the about of brown that should go in a quilt! Those fugly fabrics take fugly to a whole new level.

  15. Hahahahahahaha, I did wonder whether you were thinking of a black/brown background for the star, and though maybe it was one of these great solids that makes the colour "pop" or "float". I'm not a fan of brown (or green) but I'm sure it's because they were my school uniform colours for 7 and 6 years respectively - I'm so glad I didn't attend the schools I have since worked at as I still like blue and red!

  17. Admittedly those browns are bad, but you can find hideous fabrics in any colour...trust me, I have some! I love marmite too, I'll get my coat....

  18. Marmite is not as bad as Vegemite!
Those brown batiks are definitely not very nice, I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate them but I definitely don't want any sent to me, those, dark green or peachy.

  19. I can comment again - woohoo! I LOVE MARMITE but it surprises me that I love your quilt more!!!!! How could anyone not like it??? Those brown batiks or whatever they are have made me quite queasy. Love your non ebay choices - just ship the rest over to Rhonda!

  20. I love Marmite but hate brown - even those lovely fabrics at the top of the post. I can see they're nice but they're still brown and so I wouldn't choose them for something for myself. I do like batiks though, just not those batiks...

  21. I don't know who you think you are kidding by saying you will be back tomorrow with less attitude!! We all know that is a load of CRAP!! I have to say I think this story could be written for any color. I have seen some reds I think are hideous but I love red. Just depends on value, fabric, print, etc etc etc.

I appreciate the clarification but I would appreciate it if you left those fabrics on ebay and your Marmite (whatever that gross looking stuff might be) in the UK!!

  22. woohoo, you're famous! I really don't know where you find the time to go searching for fugly fabrics, but bravo on being brave enough to type the words into the search facility :) x

  25. I love brown fabrics - something to do with my hoarding of 70s craft books. Has to be a retro print though...

  26. You did find some truly awful ones there! I'm a marmite lover, and the only one in the family so it's ALL mine!
