Dodgy Old Bag...

I mentioned the bag, well more specifically the wooden handles, that crystallised my hexi-thoughts, well I had to go back and get it didn't I?

I decided that if there was a parking space outside the Antique Shop the next time I passed, I would stop, there was; and if the bag was still there, I would buy it...

I had minor palpitations when it wasn't where I'd left it last week, but to my relief I found it behind a new haul of goodies... that'll be fate then, phew.

The wonky handles measure 12" wide; the entirely hand sewn bag has seen way better days, but that's not the bit of 'charm' that I want to preserve.  I am going to have those handles attached to my 'new bag' as soon as my hexing will allow!

If anyone thinks this is worth way more than the meagre £7 I paid, then please shout; I don't want to be the one sobbing in the corner of Antiques Roadshow when I unpick some Medieval original, reducing its 6 figure value to £0!

  1. I think you're probably OK with that plan! Have fun ... How many hexies have you done yet?

  2. Medieval ... probably not! 1930's...maybe! Worth millions... probably not! Worth it... absolutely!

  3. Looks like someone upcycled a tablecloth! Now you are upcycling the handles! But went to the effort of lining it and all!?

  4. Bargain! You couldn't buy the handles new for that! You could always turn the old bag outer into a medieval cushion instead! Jxo

  5. What a score! The handles are going to be perfect.

It's a little sad what the actual bag looks like. Someone spent a lot of time stitching that :(

  6. Those handles are great! They look handmade - I bet somebody's husband/father/brother made them specially for a sweet little bag :)
About a year ago I bought a bag in a charity shop just for the wooden handles. I've not done anything with it yet. You're putting ideas in my head Hadley!

  7. Lovely bag! When I first read the price I thought it said £71!!! Definitely worth £7 and I think I would reuse the handles and use some nicer fabric....although the work is very pretty. I will take a photo of my bag at some point and post it for you to see. Just off camping now for a couple of weeks...Wiltshire then Devon.

  8. Great handles ... and you could make some lovely pincushions out of the bag itself - I think it's lovely!

(I'm a bit of a sucker for 30s tableclothy things, not that I have any at all ... I just fondle them in charity shops LOL!)

  15. I don't think it is an antique and it clearly was well loved. So I vote that you use those lovely handles for a new bag that you love.

  16. Wow you did well to pick up that bag, it's adorable, the embroidery, dunno how much it's worthy but it came from a good home i'd say. Oh how I miss the UK! Fi

  18. I'd definitely use the handles, and then I'd try to to clean up that embroidery and use it for something else - needle books maybe. I do like that naive embroidery..
