Having A Starry Time...

Today I am really thrilled to play my part in Alyce and the Fat Quarter Shop's Having A Starry Time bloghop.  Hello everyone, please be gentle with me...

When Alyce asked me to play, I jumped at the chance and chose 1.5" finished HSTs from the range of Triangles On A Roll sizes available; and they are brilliant, pure and simple.

I am not going to go into too much detail on the 'how', the pictures are pretty self-explanatory, and there's this great video to help if you are in doubt; but honestly, so easy.

Cut from the roll a piece that will produce the number of HSTs you require, I pressed my paper flat, to stop it trying to revert back to a roll; then layer your 2 HST fabrics, right sides together, place the paper on top, pin in place and then stitch.

Sew all the dashed lines, and cut all the solids; simple as...

Remove all the papers and press open, clipping those tails is all the trimming required for perfect 1.5" HSTs!

So for my block, which I have been really slack in not naming, (although I am not claiming originality, so it may well have a name anyway), here's a quick how to...

Cut:
Triangle On A Roll paper to create 16 background & print HSTs
Triangle On A Roll paper to create 8 Two-tone print HSTs
8 x 2" squares background fabric
1 x 6.5" square background fabric
2 x 6.5" x 3.5" background fabric

4 two-tone HSTs should be sewn to create a pinwheel; unfortunately my pictures do not show these Liberty prints in their best light, but if you look closely...

Make up one star, that will measure 6.5" finished; the remaining HSTs and 2" squares will become two halves of an identical block.

Attach one background rectangle to the top and the other to the bottom edge of the full star; attach one half star to two opposite sides of the 6.5" background square; join the two sides to make a 12.5" block as below...

Now it might not look all that, but bear with... First though, I decided to make my block into a mini quilt, and quilted it accordingly...

I think it turned out pretty nicely...

However if you were thinking this is perhaps not the most interesting of blocks, well look what it could create as a 5x5 block quilt...

I am not sure I would attempt all these small HSTs without the assistance of the Triangles On A Roll, (or in this case PicMonkey!), and being just a little bit smitten, I went and made something else; the two Liberty prints show up way better in these pictures...

I loved this little experiment.  The HSTs are perfect with such little effort; cutting the papers does not feel like the usual trimming, especially small ones which have a habit of shifting under my ruler at the crucial moment, and I would entirely recommend them to any HST-aphobe.
So, do you fancy getting your hands on a roll of 1.5" finished Triangles On A Roll?  Well who wouldn't!?

  1. I'm rubbish with naming stuff, so if that disqualifies me I am sorry. Just had to comment though, because these are FAB!!!!! I really love the subtle effect you get from the difference in value (get me, being all technical and stuff!)

  2. It reminded me of when old TVs had a strip and the picture scrolled of the bottom of the screen and reappeared at the top, so I thought maybe Scrolling Stars, but then I thought how you have very possibly cured my HST allergy, so maybe Adrenalin Stars! Xxx

  3. You are too harsh on yourself - these mini quilts are amazing. I especially like the cut-in half star. Maybe half square triangled half stars! Too long winded I know!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I especially love the quilting on your HST minis! It's probably a traditional eight-point star- a very pretty eight-point star!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Eight pointed rocket star? I love your layout with the split stars on the mini.......it gives such an interesting mix.

    ReplyDelete
  6. pinwheel stars. With these prints I like your second quilt better, because it shows the different values of the 2 fabrics.

  7. I think it should be called 'chunkstar'. They are both bloomin gorgeous Hadley and now I need myself some of those paper thingies.xx

  8. They look stunning! It looks like it is fun to use this paper. I need to go shopping!!!

It looks like the stars are making footsteps so I would call them "walking stars"

  9. Thats frickin genious, what a fab idea, they look like pretty irridescent snowflakes to me, I would called it a starflake block, have a happy Friday Hadley xx

  10. Gorgeous stars! I believe I've seen something similar before but don't remember where or what it was called. Whatever. The main thing is, they are cute and I love both minis.

  11. Very pretty stars and minis. Perhaps a name might be 'paper stars'? Di x

  12. It probably has a name from long ago, but I would call it Twinkle Star. I especially love your mini!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm a bit like Charlotte and unlike you I'm rubbish at names but I too just wanted to say what an amazing job you have done - it's a gorgeous block and love the reverse too. This blocks would make a perfect cushion cover. Oh okay, something has occurred to me - Catch a Falling Star?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm useless at names too. Twinkle is all I can think of although I can see the stropy tv star too.

  15. I'm downright terrible at naming things. The stars are cute, though. Somewhat delicate and flimsy thanks to the Liberty. Delicious delicate stars? Told you, I'm terrible at this game. :)

  16. I believe we have established time and again I suck at the name game and I suspect Starry Night is out of the question. My only other suggestion would br Liberty Stars. I do, however, know greatness when I see it (even without being told). And you, Mrs. Rocket are superbly talented!

  17. I'm rubbish at naming things so don't enter me, but I love those two mini quilts! So pretty! Rx

  18. They are very sweet! Twinkletoes?! (Have probably been spending too much time stuck at home with ill children.)

  19. Peek-a-boo Stars. At least that's what I thought when I saw it. I love both quilts!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lovely mini quilts.

I suggest shadow stars, its not a great name, for such a lovely star

    ReplyDelete
  21. How about "Stars on a Moonlit Night"? Those look awesome and a great way to make the HSTs.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Looks fab, why don't you call it Half Starred, as a silly ref to half @rsed because there will be a man who looks at it and tells you you missed half the stars off! And did i mention i would love to get my hands on your 1.5 inches ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would love to give the triangle papers a "tri"! Let's see -- a name for your starry nite block -- how about "Fleeting Stars". Thanks for the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am really bad at naming things, too. But I would call this Falling Stars. They are falling down the quilt. Of course if you flip it it could be Rising Stars, then they would be going up. I would love to give the triangle papers a shot :)

  25. The star itself is called a sawtooth star and Barbara Brackman's book dates it to the 1930's. There is a sawtooth star in the book - #2145 - which has a pinwheel in the centre like yours called Sarah's Choice by Clara Stone but that one has used the pinwheel colours to alternate on the outside star and opposite colours to the hst that touches the star point. There is not one exactly like yours in the book that I can find. I would call it Hadley's Sawtooth Star, and it is lovely. I would love a chance to play with those papers, I seem to be paper piecing all the time these days anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Absolutely love your minis. How about Rising Stars as a name?

    ReplyDelete
  27. both quilts are so pretty. love them. I am bad about naming my own quilts but your fabrics remind me of these bright pink flowers that bloom in my yard so I would call it stars in the garden.

    ReplyDelete
  28. In a reference book I have it's called "Sarah's Choice", but it might as well be Sandra's choice, as I love it ;-) Well done on the mini quilts, and to show the larger option as well!

    ReplyDelete
  29. They remind me of the points on snowflakes - so although it doesn't match the prints how about "frosted flakes"? They are beautiful. I love a "mini".

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm calling it 'The cleverest little star block I've ever seen!' Gorgeous! Jxo

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love this star--going to have to try this!! )

I'd name it "Bejeweled Star" - mostly because of the fabric choice you made! It looks like the starry glint that the old disney movies would put on jewels (like in Snow White!)

thanks for the chance to win some of that fab paper!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm going with Scattered Stars. Praise.....Awe.......Praise.......AWE

  33. The only name I can come up with is Half Star Triangles which is neither accurate nor inspiring, but might give me a chance of trying out this amazing paper, though the paper is not as amazing as your finished product ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. My first reaction was "StarBright" because of all the bright springy colours in your gorgeous little quilt. Thanks for sharing and for the opportunity on the draw.

  35. Scattered Stars is what I see . . . beautiful quilting!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't have a good name to suggest (not going to let that stop me, though!) but I know it's a gorgeous block! The nearest I can find is 'Sarah's Choice' so how about 'My name isn't Sarah' or 'All H's are stars'?! (The last one is true!)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think it should be called... mine! ;-)
Then you'd just have to send it straight to me.
Those triangles on a roll look fabulous.`

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow, this is just superb! I love the little stars and adore the fabric! Thank you for introducing us to the "Triangles on a Roll". They will definitely go on my shopping list! Wish I had known about these before... the process of piecing my brothers quilt would have gone so much easier!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm hopeless at naming things too! but I think Liz has got the right idea - mine!! (not hers'!!)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am glad it actually has a name (thanks Chiska!) because I cant come up with names but a lot of amazing one were suggested! I love the bigger mini quilt a LOT, and I love the smaller one as a full quilt idea.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What A Star ..............it is beautiful :))

    ReplyDelete
  51. I couldn't name a block if my life depended on it but it reminds me of the 70's so I'll say Groovin Star. I LOVE IT! It's just perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think it should be called 'Star Flower'.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Now, see, those are HSTs I might not mind so much... Star light, star bright? (well really , what do you expect at 1:30 am ;o) )

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  62. A Star is Born.... ?? Love them both, Hadley, gorgeous as always :-)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am really inspired by the pattern and use of fabric. Can't wait to get my hands on the triangle paper. How about Vincent's Delight as a name for the star?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I have never done HST's before, but you have truly inspired me to try, I just love both of the mini quilts you did! Especially the second one, truly amazing, what size did that one come out at? LOVELY!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love it, it makes me happy, HAPPY STAR, and as others have said the other side is wonderful the values light and dark is cool

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think they should be called Spinning Pinny Stars. They're very lovely & I really like your low contrast fabric choices, they remind me of a colourful version of low volume. Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I shall opt for the praise and awe...I think I have seen that similar block, somewhere, perhaps in an old vintage quilt? It has a traditional feel to it, but I think the way you've used the the bright colors and fresh, clean background really gives it an ultra modern look. I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm going to go with Starburst. but that might be my sugar fetish talking right now. I so need to get some of these papers. I hate trimming HSTs.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Wonderful, love the stars and the fabric. I have a huge roll of this paper from years back and have used it a few times, it really is easy to use. Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Evening glory. So pretty with those fabrics. And I love the dark/light effect of the piece on the back!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Nice job! I'm not too good with names for patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I really love both your mini quilts, and I think Pauline is inspired with "Vincent's Delight" as a name for the sawtooth star! I thought of Rocket Star, but that's nowhere near as good as other suggestions - "My name's not Sarah" made me chuckle! Lots of praise and awe coming from over here!
