Another constructive day!

I really am getting too used to mornings off work, sunshine and children old enough to entertain themselves for long enough to let me do my thang!

So, 4 more little scrappy blocks in dark pink, red and orange.

Aneela was right, these are addictive.  I have a horrible feeling that I will end up buying fabric to make more and more, which really isn't the idea!

Lynne also gave her blessing to get on with the sashing around the dresden.  I duly got mine stitched and hung on the line for a photo-call!

I added a little extra to the right-hand border.  This edge was destined to have two joining seams as I am just using scraps and leftovers for the front of the block.  So not quite enough to go round and a little dilemma.  Rather than leave it looking a little like I had run out of fabric, I stitched up a colourful little block from the last of the teensy offcuts, which may just look daft, but I like it!

Look out for my next post - there may be something in it for you!

I'm meant to be on holiday...

...but I have been working very hard!

Firstly I finished Stanley...

Then, as I had sorted out all my scraps on Sunday, in a timely fashion Aneela Hoey, oh lovely lady of the Sherbet Pips, posted about starting a crazy scrappy quiltalong - so I obviously had to sign up!

There's a linky somewhere on the left if you are interested.  The idea is to make 11" squares, but I am going to work with 6" ones, as many of my scraps are too teensy, and I am too eagar to to make lots of blocks, see...

Then I noticed that Prints to Polka Dots are doing a pre-order on Sherbet Pips, so I had to order some yardage to go with my charm packs; be quick people, the pre-order option is only open until Wednesday.

Then Lynne at Lily's Quilts posted the start of a tutorial for her Big Little George.

This is Lynne's 'example' so goodness know what sort of paper-pieced mess I am going to get into!

But up for a challenge, I got cutting and piecing and stitching and swearing and unpicking and re-stitching and eventually ended up with this...

OK, so the children were lucky to be fed, and dearest hubby feels like a total sewing-widow, but sometimes you have to go with the urge!

BlindBob and his rotund friend!

Last night I enhanced BlindBob with a jacket to make him bigger, better and complete, and I actually got the outer circle stitched onto the dresden.

I followed Lynne's instructions properly, fully and completely; and guess what - it turned out great first time with no unpicking or puckering!  The girl's a genius!

You can't really see from the picture, but the inner and outer circles are cream with white spots - I was torn between this and the Wild Thyme, however the deciding factor was not being confident to keep the pattern lined up with the segments that I wanted at the top - so spots it was!

Afterwards I was a little lost without the HUG - I realised that I had been working on it since the first week we moved into the house, so I've never had an evening here where I just sat in front of the TV and watched!  So I pulled out my Cath Kidston 'Stitch' and started a little Stanley!

Thank you all for your lovely messages about the completed masterpiece - you should all have a go  - it's addictive and despite the odd bit of miscounting, pretty foolproof.  I am looking forward to getting the KISS started, buying some yummy backing and pompoms and making them into cushions!

PS. It's the Easter holidays - yay!!

The Grande Finalé

Gimme an H...

Gimme a U...

Gimme a G...

...and what have you got?

And a very happy 'me'!!!  74 evenings, about 150 hours and just a little bit of unpicking, but so worth it!  Have a great Sunday everyone.

Good and not so good...

Well a bit of a disturbed night with poor son keeping a temperature, including being inconsolable that he had broken the Tardis, not his toy one, the real one, crashed it into a tree in the forest, apparently, at about 2am... the night didn't get much better!

The postman was able to put a smile on my face!  Firstly just seeing the package...

...and the contents, well, simply lovely!

This afternoon, after a long call with a telephone-nurse, we took the 20 mile round trip to the hospital for the first available out-of-hours doctor's appointment 2 hours later.  Running 20 minutes late, a 2 minute consultation just to diagnose a virus!  Not that I wanted more pain, suffering and prescriptions, but grrrrr!

Still, dear husband has gone to get us a Chinese takeaway, and tonight I will be finishing this...

An ill wind...

Poorly son had to be picked up from school at lunchtime, so I got to knock work on the head for the Easter holidays a half hour early, and later on that meant no school run.  So making the most of this 'summer's day', I was able to fling all the windows open, get all the washing done and hung on the line and then get a little busy with the sewing machine.  (He is feeling a little better now).

So may I present, BlindBobSquarePants - OK it's not absolutely perfect, but I am really pleased with how this has turned out...

What shall I do with it now!?  Please do not say 'make more'!

Bobbing along...

Not quite finished, but as the light was fading and I am trying not to mess it up (completely), I have saved the final piecing until tomorrow...

Trying again - bigger and better!

Well I am posting my progress so far, ie. before it all goes horribly wrong!  With triangles twice the size and seams that are now visible to the human eye and pressed open.  I am a little more optimistic.  I am even attempting a 'LynneBobSquarePants' block!!!

The next stage of the QAL has been posted - I think I'll save that for the weekend as I am now quite eager to see how this floral experiment turns out.

A little more presentable...

This morning I went to the school Easter assembly, lots of happy hymns and smiling children.  It also meant I had to wait for 30 minutes between drop off and kick off, so I got to do some HUG in the car!

Having a second look at the mangled mess that was my HST experiment , I twigged that I had actually been sewing and pressing 1/8" seams instead of 1/4" doh!  I am going to blame that for the complete fiddly-fiasco that I ended up with.  I will try again another day and may well attempt some of the alternative methods you, my trusty confidants have suggested, thank you.

So the quick 5 minute scrap trial tonight was this 'little beauty'...

It worked first time!  Even I could have mucked this up, so I am happy.  A definite-maybe for the project.

In need of Inspiration...

I have ordered some lovely fabric recently, and am in need of serious inspiration for what to make with it.  This evening I played with some HSTs for the first time, and the resultant mini-block is so scrappy with a silent 's' that I am not even going to post a picture!

I love the look of the Kathy Doughty's Cowboy Baby quilt, and it is currently top of my list.  Hence my attempt at triangulation!

Material Obsession - Cowboy Baby
I think my mistake was working with 2" squares, stitching and cutting in two - my sausage fingers weren't up the all those fiddly minuscule points - note to self, sometimes big is obviously better!

I also need to perfect my pressing, especially when working with white cotton - a new ironing board cover and a clean cloth are definitely the order of the day.

Happy Mother's Day!

Cards, flowers, croissants, chocolates, pizza, ice-cream, cake and family = A Happy Mummy!

For those that have asked...

... and for those that haven't, here's a quick look at, (tutorial isn't the word I'd use) how I make those little trinket / travel trays.

Firstly, total credit goes to Jo Ebisujima as this project appeared in last month's Sew Hip; but if you missed that, and/or want to have a laugh see how something really simple can be turned into something that seems far more complicated, then keep reading.  If not, see you tomorrow!!

This should only take about half an hour, (to make, not read) if you have all the necessities to hand, including a hammer and poppers.

I first made these with beautiful Echino, but the last two have been made with the free sample swatches that the lovely John Lewis people like to send.  They are roughly A4, so perfect for this project!

As I wanted to make a smaller tray for my Mum, compared the one I make for Dad the other day,  I have cut the fabric down, no measuring, just making sure to have a square and a rectangle that is as wide as the square.  For my Dad, I folded the corner over to make a square and used the off-cut for the second piece.

These are the two patterned pieces I wanted, and a corresponding piece of plain cotton-linen.  Due to the weight of the poppers, this will work best with heavier cottons or linen, or your sides won't stand up!

I cut the plain fabric in two, one third of the way along, and then trimmed a little excess off the patterned strip.  All seams are meant to be 1/4", but as long as they are all the same, it doesn't matter.

Stitch the 3 smaller pieces together, with the patterned piece in the middle and press seams to the dark side if you have one, otherwise whatever takes your fancy...

Lay the two squares on top of each other, right-sides together, making sure any pattern is facing the right way, and trim to a 'perfect' square.

I pin mine, especially the seams, but you may wish to just get stitching...

Remember to leave gap for turning, depending on the thickness of your fabric, but about an inch and a half seems to work.

Trim the corners a little, and turn, poking your corners out with blunt pencil.

Press as hard as you can!  Then you can slip stitch the gap.  On the first few I stitched round the edge at about 1/2" in, but I haven't on the last two, unlike on a nice big quilt, the slightest wobble shows and I think they look fine without!

Now for the bit that takes a little attention.  You will need a packet of Fashion Snaps, and you will need the ones with the little gizmo for hammering them in.

For each corner you will need to place a sets of corresponding poppers, firstly marking with a pencil.

As in my pics, it's easier to see than explain. On this one, they are 2cm in from the corner/top and 1cm in from the side.  In order for the poppers to match up, the second measurement should be half the first, ie. 3cm & 1.5cm, 4cm & 2cm depending on the size of your tray.

Each pair of poppers consists of 4 parts, two of which have spikes.  These need to go on the underside of the tray.  Push them through the fabric trying to ensure that the pencil dot is in the centre.  Follow the instructions on your popper packet, although I find only using the tool for the non-spiked side and manually lining up the spikes first works best - this has been learnt through trial and error and a lot of bent-up poppers.

Apologies for the blurry photos - I didn't notice until it was too late.

Once you have hammered in the 4 sets, it should look like this...

And with poppers fastened, like this...

If you have positioned your poppers correctly, you will also be able to fasten diagonally or in half too.

I do hope that this has made some sense, but please ask for clarification on any, or all of it - thank you for making it to the end!

Happy Anniversary Mum & Dad!

What a relief!

Anyone following me back in the days of trying to move home and getting all the school applications in on time, will be pleased, (well I hope so!) to hear that this morning we got the confirmation that the girls have places at the school we desperately hoped they would with their brother, just down the road.

Phew...

So now I can relax, enjoy the weekend, and start by taking a look through my new Making and Sew Hip magasines (I spy Echino birdies on the cover!).

I am awaiting some Sanderson samples in order to make another fabric tray for my Mum.  Hopefully they will arrive tomorrow morning so I can whip that up before we see each other on Sunday.  If not, I'll look for some Plan B fabric...
