Awesome Austerity...

Well how could I resist?

FairyFace Designs

As I may have mentioned, I am making a concerted effort to use my stash, rather than mindlessly reverting to shopping for new this year, and my lovely friend Sarah just made that a little bit more acceptable, communal and fun!

My stash consists of 2 unused layer cakes, half a dozen charm packs, no beautifully stacked shelves like a fabric shop here; I rarely buy cuts bigger than FQs, unless it is specifically needed, and even less over a yard.

Most pieces have at least one corner missing or some awkward fussy cut hole, so for all intents and purposes 50% of my stash is scrap.  I know, it's sad isn't it!?

My #economyblockalong mini is 100% from scraps...

Harry Potter was a scrap-magnet..

... except for the backing, as I had a whole stashed 1/2m, and I have already pulled a bundle of scraps to supplement some partial charm packs for a teacher's baby quilt.

So the odds are looking good that I will be regularly linking up with other scrap-busters this year.  How about you?  Pop over to Sarah's, grab the button, and get those scraps working, you know you want to. xxx

  1. Yup, I'm a scrappy quilter too because I subsist on bits of chopped up FQs but (mostly) I like it that way.

  2. I hardly ever buy anything bigger than an FQ (unless it's for dressmaking, obv. I haven't resorted to patchwork clothes just yet!)

  4. Yep I'm a scrapper. I can't believe you don't have more fabric stashed away though. You keep making quilts every time I blink!

  5. I'm another 'only really buy FQs' quilter and even then they're bought for a specific project - it may make being in a stash bee a little tricky but I'm hoping that I rarely have to buy something for a bee block, if anything I think it will be background fabric that I struggle to find in my stash. I've started buying some backing fabric in the sales - I decided that if I loved the fabric and it was in colours that I tended to use (as well as being knocked down to a very, very good price) then it was worth buying somewhere near 4m to put away for the future. All I need to do now is finish some of the tops and the backing will be useful and worth the purchase price!

  7. Have you seen the Rainbow Scrap Challenge Angela does here?: http://superscrappy.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/first-scraphappy-saturday-of-2014.html
She has a link up each Saturday. Most people are doing blocks for quilts. At the moment she is doing tutorials pretty much every day for 6" blocks. This challenge runs for the whole year and each month is a different colour. January is Blue.

  8. See I should have stuck to FQs that is were I started then moved on to half yard cuts. Occasionally a yard if it is on sale. I have an uncut stash and a scrap stash. Oddly enough I typically work from my scraps. Makes a girl think. Not sure I am ready to do the fabric diet-even though I probably should. I very much like your 'scrap magnet' Harry Potter. I love that you said scrap magnet...haha

  10. Unfoirtiunately i am a fabric hoarder, and although most of them are only fq's they seem to be multiplying, eeek, fabric and project starting diet required!

  13. I definitely need to embrace this band wagon, sadly I am a fabric boarder who struggles to cut into all the lovely fabric lurking in my cupboard!

  14. I remember my first quilt book, it was a Thimbleberries one and it said you should always buy a yard of fabric if you like it, if you love it, buy 3 yds and even back then I laughed and thought "not at UK prices"!!
This sounds like a good way to start 2014.x

  15. Looks like you're all set! I have one, carefully pulled pile of scraps for a specific project, but I fear with some work travel coming up, it will be March or so before I get there *sigh*

  16. I am doing well so far considering it's only the 11th! It's hard to read only blog entries and not online store entries because that's where my will-power crumbles!

  17. Good work on the scraps, I tend to see most of my stash as scraps as well, but I am not really sure that is what others call scraps.

  18. I'm with you! I'll be scrapping along...but still buying in the goodies, too. Love your scrappy makes!

  19. This looks like such a great idea, reckon I'll be joining in. Can't wait to see what else you do!

  20. Well, I have a huge stash, but it's mostly of stuff Fq size, not too many bigger cuts. But I have so many FQS and other precuts that together it would cover many bolts! No no no to patchwork clothing ladies! My Mum made a patchwork quilted jacket in the 80s, burgundy strips. Do you remember these at all? When patchwork began it's revival. (Gosh mum was probably only my age, 36, then! Not an old lady!) Wearing a bed coat/dressing gown looking thing is not good. Although a skirt made of many coordinating fabrics may be cool ...
