With all the happenings of the last week or so, you would be forgiven for thinking I had hung up my sewing machine (?) and retired to the television (and vodka?), but not me.
Last weekend I pulled out the Terrain jelly roll and charm pack I had been saving for my sister's birthday next year, and got planning and making a quilt for her and my brother-in-law for now.
I googled 'jelly roll quilts' having got nowhere on Moda Bake Shop, not having the extra 3 jelly rolls, 2 layer cakes and 18yds of backing most of the patterns there required, and spotted the one, which I just did a bit of maths for and winged it. I just love the simplicity.
I ordered some of my favourite Klona from Backstitch for the backing, a half meter of one of the flora prints from eBay for the binding, and used about a meter Kona Snow for the rest.
I had the fabric arrive and it all pieced and quilted by last Wednesday, spent a couple of evenings on the binding and had it all washed and tumbled yesterday.
It should arrive early next week to coincide with their anniversary, and it is the closest thing to being able to give them a real-life hug as I can do right now.
It measured 62"x 72" before washing, has straight-line quilting a foot's width each side of the seams, 50wt Aurifil in 2021 off-white on the front and 40wt teal 4043 on the back.
I hope it arrives quickly xxx
that is so beautiful Hadley, I am sure they will love it x
ReplyDeleteThis is really lovely Hadley. I especially like the quilting and how well it complements the stacks of colours. I love it when a quilt contains your thoughts of someone else with every stitch. I do hope it helps ease their pain a little - it really does look like a big hug x
ReplyDeleteOh, it's beautiful - I hope it comforts them as much as is possible at a time like this xx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. They will appreciate the 'hug' and it says what you cannot verbalise. Di x
ReplyDeleteOh wow - it's just completely and utterly stunning! I don't think you can do much wrong with Terrain but you've taken it to a whole new level. I really hope it gives your sister and a husband a little comfort. x

ReplyDeleteLovely Hadely, and I'm sure they'll appreciate the sentiments that went into the making of it.
ReplyDeleteThat's lovely, very cheering. I think it has a great ratio of time spent vs impact, too - great use of a jelly roll!
ReplyDeleteI sometimes look through the Mode Bakeshop patterns and get frustrated at the charm square patterns that aren't, too. Glad it's not just me.
Looks gorgeous Hads, I'm sure they'll appreciate it :-)
ReplyDeleteThe pieced backing is lovely. Nice job on the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the Bake Shop patterns- I can heartily recommend the Lintott books though as they're always one Jelly Roll and usually no more than a couple of yards of your favourite solid.

ReplyDeleteThat's gorgeous! It will be the best kind of Hadley-not-present hug you could give. I'm glad it's not just me that finds that with moda bakeshop. It's like the pick the projects that require us to buy as many precuts as possible to throw a one project.
