Keep calm..

... and sew on.

Despite the best efforts of the builders next door to drive me out of my mind own home for the day; pneumatic drilling, 30 seconds on, 5 seconds off, from 9am to 2.30pm, 5 meters from my conservatory door; I gritted my teeth, (and swore loudly when they couldn't hear me), and stitched up my Cherry Christmas quilt top.

I used Sarah Fielke's Ups and Downs block pattern from Hand Quilted With Love.  I had charm packs, so I simply used the 5" squares, plus my yardage to make the HSTs...

It measures up at 54.5" x 68", which will be a very useful sofa-sized quilt come the festive period...

I just have to ponder the backing.

I was thinking some minky or fleece, but am a bit worried about quilting that, so maybe flannel may be the solution?  I have plenty of time eh.

Famous last words!

  1. Ooh dangerous thought there! Something cosy sounds great. Haven't tried any of those alternatives ...let me know what happens!

  2. Looks fabulous but have no idea how you are hanging into your sanity. I hate incessant noise. Pneumatic drilling would have me running for the hills. Did you like your neighbours before this?!

  3. That's was some achievement with all that racket! A fleecy back would be so snuggly - just spray baste it really well and up your stitch length! Jxo

  4. Hmmmm, still got plenty done then ;-)

  5. I back loads of my quilts with fleece with no problems - in fact I find them easier to pin baste as no need to worry about wrinkles in the backing. Hope the builders finish quickly x

  6. My sewing machine is so loud it probably would have drowned the noise out anyway ;) Glad you made it through! I think fleece sounds like a great idea, it has started to feel so cold already!

  7. Ahh, I think they're friends with the chainsaw wielders that have been round here this week, it's a conspiracy...

  8. If you were closer I would bring you my noise cancelling headphones. I love the quilt. If you use flannel it will be wonderful, but do pre-wash the flannel first. I put flannel on my holiday quilt last year and it so nice for winter snuggles.

  9. i always use fleece, but dont quilt very heavily, I've never used minky. (can't get past associating minky being the name for a girl's, um, front bottom)

  11. I am currently one of those evil people driving my neighbours mad with building works. So, on behalf of all of us, I apologise ;-)

  12. I hope your neighbours are making lots of 'sorry about the noise' noises as I can only imagine how awful it is for you. Anyway, your quilt looks fab and some flannel would be lovely :-)

  14. Quilt looks marvellous. As for enough time...I thought that last year and made myself a Christmas quilt top...and backing. I just haven't made the quilt yet.

Hope the builders give you some piece. If not can you wind some wadding around their tools when they're on a tea break?

  16. Gorgeous quilt and so quickly made given the circumstances! Lady Sew & Sew have some flannels at £7.00 per metre in their Rowan clearance that 'might' work, worth a look :)

  17. Looking great! I have never machine quilted over fleece baking but I have backed quilts with just fleece, no wadding, and hand quilted them. Really nice and relaxing and snuggly with the chilly evenings.

  18. You'll need to get some of those wireless headphones to block it all out :/ Hopefully all the drilling will stop soon. Love your quilt it will be fabulous for Christmas! Sx

  19. Love it, I should make us a Christmas quilt. I have never tried minky so am not sure if it is tricky to work with or not.

  23. Oh wow it's fabulous! So glad to see you getting in the festive spirit (well hopefully) in between the drilling!! I wish I had time to make a Christmas quilt for the family. Maybe next year...

  24. Minky will be fine, polish your machine surface, as the pile can create a bit more drag :) top looks fab!

  26. Gorgeous! We've used fleece to back quite a few of the Bee Blessed quilts this year and it really was much easier than I expected. Like Jude says spray baste it really well and go for it, it would make your quilt so snuggly!

  29. Very nice looking quilt pattern. May have to find that one myself. I don't blame you for going nuts at the builders. That noise would send my crazy. I'd probably escape to my parents/library/even work for the day.
