Knitting Nancy!

My sweet, (but obviously misguided), friend Rachel claims that all quilters can knit - I wish!

All over blogland and instagram my pals seem to be whipping up hats and socks and all sorts of fancy business whilst I can't even cast on (get me and the lingo).  I probably need another expensive hobby like a hole in the head, wool really makes me itch, and hats give me bad hair, but I still wish I could.

I tried once, the stitches got tighter and tighter until there was no way the needles were going to be set free without scissors.

One of the girls got this as a present a couple of birthdays ago - it has sat, looking scary for too long.  I am thinking I might borrow it, just to see...

But for now, and for those, like me who are not all that with the big needles, here are a few things I have spotted recently...

Lindsey's super cute bear, in a Liberty skirt!

Fancy a cuppa?

Don't mind if I do!

  1. I can't knit either. Tension issues, dropped stitches. You name it if it's wrong I do it. That said I won a ball of that frilly scarf wool and managed to knit a scarf - it wasn't like proper knitting. Gave it to a friend as a present and she loves it. And yeah you needed big needles. Now I just need someone to knit me some fingerless mittens because it's so cold in our office.

  2. Knitting is the very best, I know you can do it. I would be happy to assist if you need help. I have knit since I was 5 years old.

  3. I can't knit for S**t either and don't think I have the patience to learn.

  4. I can't knit to save myself. And I'm allergic to wool, so I have no inclination to try again, I just make my mum knit me things in cotton if I want them ;o)

  5. I love knitting, and sure you can learn to do it. I can't wear a lot of wool next to my skin ( but that includes a lot of fabric as well) but modern technology has come up with all sorts of improved 'wool' especially the superwash sort that can be machine washed (which is a big bonus). With your flare for colours and design you could have so much fun.

  6. I can knit, but VERY slowly so have never made anything bigger than a scarf. One day I would love to knit a jumper.

  8. I certainly can't, although I learnt to crochet a little a few months ago. Love that bear!

  9. I can knit, but overdosing on jumpers for the nephews and nieces one Christmas gave me a thumb injury, and so I started quilting. Not knit anything since!

  10. I can knit - my Nana taught me when I was little - but only the basic knit & purl stitches. I did managed to teach myself how to knit socks back when I started blogging, but haven't done any for ages. Happy to help if you want some (very basic) advice!

  11. Don't beat yourself up. You don't have to be able to do everything!!!

  12. Thanks for posting my bear...that certainly gave a boost to my viewings :)
You will be able to knit, the key is to handle the yarn lightly then it won't become tight around the needle. I can't wear wool next to my skin either but I do love to see hand knitted things especially as there are such great yarns on the market. Have a go with that little kit....you can do it!

  17. What a challenge. Who needs to know knitting if she can make quilts?

  18. I could have written this post as I feel exactly the same way. Having said that, I am not far off finishing an infinity scarf - it think it helps if you buy expensive wool as you have to try harder...and I could have made a quilt for the cost of the yarn! Good luck - I'm sure you can do it :)

  19. I learnt to crochet, knit & purl when I was a wee jot but I have never been able to master reading a pattern in either language.
I did manage a very simple sweater for my son when he was 2. He got to wear it when he was 5!!! LOL I only managed that because I had a daily 4 hour commute with a bunch of really good knitters.
Now I knit scarves for the homeless in all plain or all purl.
My mother & sisters (bar one) all knit or crochet beautifully! I feel like a SQIB!!! LOL
You could go have lessons at Yarntastic (close to Eclectic Maker) :)
    Cheers

  20. Good luck with it - I decided when I was pregnant that I simply had to learn to knit. So far I've managed a few hats and a jumper!

  22. I can knit but really can't be bothered! My mum knits so the kids already have a wardrobe full of jumpers and cardies that they won't wear!

  23. I can knit. My Grandmas taught me when I was little. It's probably the craft I saw family members participate most in. However, I can only do very basic knit and purl and have the uncanny knack of increasing stitches? It's way to slow for me. Give me a machine so I can finish something quickly!
