Not my finest hour. The front isn't too bad, although my manoeuvring was more 3-point turn than smooth turning circle! The pattern is a little 'tight' to be used on a full sized quilt, however it was fun to do.
BUT, and I have a big but, the tension, or my speed, (Rhonda help me out - I knew I should have watched your videos first!), was totally off, and at one point I even forgot to put the foot down!
Idiot! |
As for gloves - no photo, I forgot, but I used squares of anti-slip carpet mesh, with cut finger holes, and I do believe it made a difference - thanks Lotti xxx I still need to work on larger pieces for anything to really prove useful I think.
Next weeks' instalment looks and sounds like fun and a little festive too with 'Pine Needles", so if you want to join in, or see how the others are getting on, pop over to Cindy's, to see her Fluffy Sheep Quilting.
I usually end up with tension problems like that when the thread slips off that little knob on the top of the machine that you also wind the thread round when you`re winding a bobbin. I think you`re being hard on yourself Hadley - it looks a pretty decent attempt to me.
ReplyDeleteThe front looks fine! I think your top tension is too loose - try altering it a little at a time but don't forget to write down where you started so you can reset it for piecing! Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteI agree you are being too hard on yourself. The center looks fine and the stippling looks fine. I have to adjust the tension a lot. Piecing my tension is set at 4.0 and sometimes to FMQ I set it at 0.0. It can change from bobbin to bobbin or the pattern I'm stitching. Crazy!
ReplyDeleteI think that you did very well Hadley, I find little curves quite difficult, but yours look great.
ReplyDeleteI think this looks good Hadley! Tension can always be a funny thing. I usually find re threading my bobbin fixes mine.
ReplyDeleteIt is very difficult to tell Hadders but I am thinking since you didn't have any trouble the second time, it was simply how you were moving. I am assuming the big nest if from not having the foot down? I wouldn't adjust the tension until you try a straight line first.
ReplyDeleteHadley,
ReplyDeleteI kind of like the "flower surrounded by stippling" idea.
My machine won't let me stitch if the foot isn't down. I know this because of the number of times I've tried.
ReplyDeleteYou are really motoring along! My machine 'beeps' at me if I try to set of with the foot down!! Bit like not having my seat belt on, really! Practice, practice!
ReplyDeleteI think your guts look like a big pretty chrysanthemum!
ReplyDeleteThe front looks fab. I don't quilt much, but my FMQ used o look like that, but first I changed the bobbin thread (soft touch I think) which helped, but o Aurifil on the top did it for me!
ReplyDeleteBTW I was surprised at you being able to sew with the foot up, so i went back and found your post about your machine (aren't labels great). I wasQUITE sure that you had a brother, but I see it's a Jenome. Mine are brothers, so I'll stop (until I next forget) trying to give you operating instructions !!!!
Looks great to me...well done!!
ReplyDeleteYou are doing yourself down! I definitely thought it looked like a beautiful Japanese Crysanthanum (I really can't spell that!). You are doing really well...
ReplyDeleteEeek, that knot at the back looks a tad scary, but the rest isn't so bad. My machine won't let me play with the foot down either - it even gives me a red light if it isn't happy lol
ReplyDeleteDefinitely getting better at the movement Hadley - the tension is a technical thing that just needs tweaking! You are getting there! Just keep up the practice - on the verge of a breakthrough I would say!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great, gut rot or otherwise :) I've been having thread tension problems lately too!
ReplyDeleteThis looks fine, centre looks best, did you panic or lose interest halfway thu?!
ReplyDeleteI have so missed reading and writing blogs and so ... a first for a very long time ... I am so enjoying your efforts. They look great to me ... the tensions problems are plagueing me too!!
ReplyDeletehadley, you are improving every week. i know you are probably rolling your eyes at me, but i am serious!
ReplyDeleteThe front is looking pretty good. The tension issue is ongoing for me too. But I think we are getting better.
ReplyDeletekeep trying...this is why you practice!! I hope it becomes fun soon. Diane xx
ReplyDeleteI think the centre looks great - until you lost interest! I have some similar problems, but my machine is supposed to be self tensioning, so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
ReplyDeleteYour post made me laugh - gut rot! Doesn't look too bad to me and your stippling is great :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a great attempt Hadley, don't be so hard on yourself. The tension could be a little tighter on the top (it will pull up the bobbin thread then) What sort of speed are you doing? full throttle is not the best way, go for about 50% speed, steady enough that you are not flustered :) keep going you are definitely improving :)
ReplyDeleteBetween your "Gut Rot" and Toni's "Gut's Edition" you two are cracking me up with your FMQ practice this week. Hey kudos to you for trying!
ReplyDeletePoor you with indigestion :)
ReplyDeleteI had the same issue with forgetting to put the foot down and getting crazy, crazy loops! It's so hard to remember and when you do its too late. Stinks. It looks like your bobbin tension is off as the thread is just "lying" there. Did you play with that at all? The point is you tried, and you're learning (aren't we all?!?!). Your stipple looks great! xx
