Always the sun...

Remember the sun?  I have passed down stories of it to my children, you know, the sun you see when you break through the clouds in an airplane, the sun that, according to legend, used to shine in these parts in something called 'the summer'... in the days before the rain came.

So this weeks Zakka Style sew-along project, the Rain Cloud Mug Rug needed a pick me up... there was no way I was sewing rain!  I have had e-bloody-nough of the real thing!

Zakka Style Sew Along

So may I present my take on this project...

A fussy-cut Heather Ross sunshine, looking a bit bemused by all the clouds in the way, but trying to shine none-the-less...

You can just about make out the detail on the clouds; fancy eh?  Bondaweb, not needle-turned appliqué is my friend, if it's good enough for John, aka Quilt Dad, it's good enough for me.

On the reverse I even went a bit wild, having broken open the variegated yellow Aurifil for the rays, I machine embroidered the words to the song that has been going round and round in my head...

It was all made with scraps, and it may not be my best or favourite project so far, but it's growing on me.

In case you are in need of a pick me up or a bit of teenage/80s reminiscing too, this one's for you...

Finally, a huge thank you for all the comments left so far on the Fluffy Sheep Quilting giveaway post yesterday... there's still time to enter or take advantage of Cindy's discount code, so if you haven't already, please take a look... there will be further reminders... and what could possibly make a cold miserable day feel better than a bit of online fabric shopping eh!?

  2. Your sun looks a bit reluctant to smile! What a cute little project and the Stranglers to top it off. Oh those 80s (sigh).

  3. If you ever get sick of it I'd gladly give it a home...
P.S. Must live under a stone - not heard that song before!

  5. Oh poor Hadders, hope you're taking some vit. D pills in the meantime, sounds like you need it! Just as well you live so far south, you'd just die up here... Love the fancy fluffy swirls on the clouds, its a real cute alternative to the R word.

  8. Just think of all the good that rain is doing your garden! That sun looks slightly constipated to me!

Saw the stranglers live - not hugh cornwell but one of the best shows nevertheless

  14. Ha - we have your sun but I suspect it won't be for long.

    I like your bemused sun.
I tried to get into this project but unfortunately the whole mug rug trend flew right over my head.
The closest I came was from viewing Teje's (Nero's Post and Patch). Her's are inspired.
My daughter made me ceramic coasters featuring the sun and the moon which I adore - which means I have zero need/tolerance for a rain cloud mug rug.
I did take your advice and bought my zakka book from the Book Depository. Great price+good discount+free shipping to the states made it less than ten bucks. THANK YOU.

  19. Love the face on the sun! The only thing that is getting me through these dark days of rain is that in just over two weeks I will be sitting by the pool, trying to soak in a years worth of Vit D :)

  20. I think your mug rug has bought the sunshine out because we have blue skies and sun here this morning! Yay!

  22. Oh it's just fab Hadley - you always know how to give something a little H twist. Bondaweb has been my best friend the last week and hope to reveal all tomorrow. Did you FMQ your applique stitching? I'm always in need of a teenage '80s reminisce even if it does bring back images of stting round the stereo with a 10p piece balanced on the needle. Oh those were the days!
